Leaving Tokyo

Flight from the Familiar
A sudden departure
Watanabe takes his savings and leaves Tokyo without telling Midori much. He travels by trains, buses, and rides from town to town.
No destination
His movement is not a search for a particular place. He wants to sleep in unfamiliar towns and remain outside the routines that now feel unbearable.
Life on the Road

Survival Without a Plan
Improvised days
Watanabe sleeps in stations, parks, beaches, and other places, working as a laborer when he needs money. He eats simply and moves on.
A world observed
The road exposes him to strangers who offer food, shelter, or rejection. Their responses reach him unevenly while his attention remains fixed on Naoko.
The Dead Beside Him

Memory as an Incoming Tide
Images return
Watanabe recalls Naoko’s gestures, clothes, and body in detail. The memories arrive as a flood that carries him into an imagined world shared with the dead.
The tide recedes
When the images withdraw, he is left alone with grief. The repeated movement shows that remembrance can offer temporary presence without ending loss.
The Fisherman’s Kindness

Help from a Stranger
An offered meal
A young fisherman listens to Watanabe, shares sake and sushi, and presses money on him. Watanabe accepts despite feeling that he has not earned the kindness.
A moral awakening
The exchange makes Watanabe remember how carelessly he treated an earlier girlfriend. His sorrow begins to include responsibility for the living people he has hurt.
The Train Back

Returning to the Real World
A decision to stop
Watanabe checks the date and realizes he has been traveling for a month. He buys a ticket to Tokyo, understanding that he cannot continue indefinitely.
No immediate recovery
He returns in much the same state as when he left and still cannot call Midori. The journey changes his location, not yet his capacity to reconnect.
